Quick Guide

  • Tall flowers spiked with individual blooms of bicoloured purple and yellow lips
  • Flowers appear all summer with this sensational perennial
  • Lupins are ideal for adding that cottage garden feel to the landscape
  • This variety looks excellent grown with purple, pink, and blue flowering plants
  • Remember to water Lupins well during periods of prolonged heat

Lupin 'Purple Emperor’ offers that cottage garden favourite look of attractive purple and cream towers of colour.

The tall flowerheads are made up of two parts, the top part is cream, and the bottom lip is purple.

These Lupins have been much loved by the generations and often provoke memories of them planted in grandparent’s gardens.

Look great when planted in the middle of a mixed planted border but is also happy in a planted container arrangement.

The Lupin is a Pea family member with flowers almost identical to a Sweetpea flower.

Flowers reach up to 90cm in high.

Plant Care

If you are planting a Lupin in the garden, lightly fork over it to loosen the soil. Add in organic matter by digging in some Peat-free John Innes compost. Once the soil is mixed, dig a small hole with a spade and add a generous handful of Mycorrhizal fungi to the bottom of the planting hole. Place the Lupin plant and back-fill with soil. Make sure you have not buried the plant lower in the ground than in the pot. After planting, firm the soil around the plant, so the plant's roots are in touch with the garden soil. After planting, water thoroughly; make sure the soil is moist but not too wet for the first two weeks.
