Quick Guide

  • Deep blue and purple flower spikes
  • Flowers in early to mid-summer
  • Robust and tall garden feature
  • Perfect for traditional cottage gardens
  • Attracts bees and butterflies

'King Canute' is a majestic variety of Lupin that stands out with its regal, deep blue and purple flower spikes, creating a bold and striking effect in the garden. This herbaceous perennial blooms in early to mid-summer, offering a dazzling display that can add height and drama to any planting scheme, particularly suiting traditional cottage gardens. The tall, sturdy spikes rise above attractive, palmate foliage, making 'King Canute' an ideal choice for the back of borders or as an eye-catching feature in mixed beds. Besides its visual appeal, this variety is also known for attracting bees and butterflies, adding life and movement to the garden. Easy to grow and care for, 'King Canute' thrives in well-drained soil and full sun to partial shade, proving to be a robust addition to any outdoor space.

Plant Care

Lupinus 'King Canute' prefers a sunny to partially shaded position in well-drained, fertile soil. Watering should be regular, ensuring the soil remains moist but not waterlogged, especially during dry spells. Deadheading the spent flower spikes after blooming encourages further flowering and extends the display. In late autumn, cut back the plant's foliage to ground level to promote fresh, vigorous growth the following spring. An annual application of a balanced fertiliser in spring will help support its robust growth and enhance flowering performance. While generally low-maintenance, 'King Canute' may benefit from staking in exposed sites to prevent wind damage.
