Quick Guide
We plant each one to match the photo as closely as we can. If a plant or pot isn't available, we'll swap in a close match so the overall look is the same.
- Cyclamen, double daisies, orange violas, heuchera, thyme and ivy
- A trough sized for balconies and sills
- Orange violas with small, bright faces
- Pompom double daisies among the cyclamen
- Variegated ivy trails over the edge
- Thyme gives off scent when you brush it
- Water at the base, not over the cyclamen
A balcony is often the garden you see most, from the sofa, the kitchen or the bedroom window. This trough is planted to keep it full of colour as autumn sets in, with cyclamen, double daisies and orange violas flowering side by side.
The violas bring small, bright faces, the daisies add round pompoms, and the cyclamen hold their flowers up on slim stems above patterned leaves. Heuchera fills in with rounded foliage, thyme adds small aromatic leaves, and variegated ivy trails over the edge.
Set it along a balcony, on a wide sill or at the top of the front steps. Rub a sprig of thyme between your fingers as you water. Every trough is planted up by hand at Boma when you order.
Plant Care
Stand the trough in a bright spot and raise it on pot feet so it drains freely. Water only when the top of the compost feels dry, and pour at the base rather than over the cyclamen's crown. Pick off faded flowers and any yellowing cyclamen leaves to keep new buds coming, and trim the ivy if it gets long. There's no need to feed through winter. The cyclamen is the most tender plant here, so in a hard frost move the trough somewhere sheltered or cover it with fleece. On a high, windy balcony, keep it against the wall.
