Quick Guide

  • Glossy green foliage year-round
  • Creamy white berries through winter
  • Thrives in shaded corners
  • Fully hardy and low-maintenance
  • Needs male Skimmia for berries

Skimmia japonica 'O'Berries White' is a striking evergreen shrub prized for its elegant white berries that persist through winter, contrasting beautifully against glossy dark green foliage. The scented white flowers appear in spring, developing into clusters of creamy white berries in autumn.

This is a fully hardy, low-maintenance shrub that thrives in partial to full shade, making it perfect for shaded borders, woodland gardens or containers. It prefers moist, well-drained soil and should be kept well-watered during establishment.

As a female cultivar, it requires a nearby male Skimmia plant for successful berry production. Growth is slow and naturally neat, reaching approximately 1–1.5m in height, making it ideal for smaller gardens.

Note: Skimmia berries are toxic if ingested, so position with care if you have young children or pets.

Plant Guide

Plant in partial to full shade in moist, well-drained soil. Water well during establishment and in dry spells. Feed with general fertiliser in spring if soil is poor. Prune only to maintain shape if needed; this naturally compact shrub requires minimal intervention. A male Skimmia cultivar nearby will ensure reliable berry production. Mulch around the base to retain moisture and suppress weeds.
