Quick Guide

  • Air-purifying
  • Low-maintenance
  • Drought-tolerant
  • Stylish and elegant
  • Grows well in low light

The Sansevieria Mikado, also known as Snake Plant, African Spear, or Mother-in-Law's Tongue, is a popular indoor plant known for its low-maintenance and air-purifying properties. It has long, sword-shaped leaves in a deep green colour, with some varieties having striking yellow variegation. The snake plant is a versatile plant that can be placed in a variety of home locations, including corners, hallways, and even bathrooms. It also pairs well with other indoor plants, such as ZZ plants, pothos, and spider plants.

The snake plant is a slow-growing plant that can reach a maximum height of 120cm and a spread of 60cm. It is relatively low-maintenance, requiring only occasional watering and fertilisation. The snake plant is also very drought-tolerant and can survive for long periods without water, making it a perfect plant for forgetful gardeners.

In addition to its aesthetic beauty, the snake plant is also known for its air-purifying properties. It can help to remove harmful toxins from the air, such as benzene, formaldehyde, and trichloroethylene. This makes the snake plant a great choice for homes with pets or children.

Plant Care Guide

The snake plant is a very low-maintenance plant, but it does require some basic care to thrive. Here are a few tips:

  • Watering: Water the snake plant deeply when the soil is completely dry. Be careful not to overwater, as this can lead to root rot.
  • Misting: Misting is not necessary for snake plants, but it can help to increase humidity levels in the air, which can be beneficial for the plant.
  • Feeding: Fertilise the snake plant once a month during the growing season (spring and summer) with a balanced liquid fertiliser.
  • Humidity: Snake plants prefer low humidity levels, but they can tolerate a variety of humidity levels.
  • Light conditions: Snake plants can grow in a variety of light conditions, from low light to bright indirect light. They should not be placed in direct sunlight, as this can scorch their leaves.
  • Drafts: Snake plants are sensitive to drafts, so avoid placing them in areas where there is a lot of air movement.
  • Temperature changes: Snake plants prefer warm temperatures, but they can tolerate a range of temperatures from 10-30 degrees Celsius.
