Rhododendron 'Lord Roberts', a celebrated British cultivar bred by B. Mason around 1900, is renowned for its deep red flowers adorned with a striking black flare. These flowers form a spectacular ball-shaped truss, blooming in early June. Recognised as one of the toughest and strongest red varieties, it is well-suited for most garden situations, making it a versatile addition to any landscape.

With a height of 150-180cm within ten years, 'Lord Roberts' develops into a dense bush, featuring thick, leathery foliage. This hardy hybrid, a catawbiense derivative, is particularly favoured for hedging and screening, providing privacy and structure with its robust growth and vibrant colour. Tolerant of some wind and easy to grow, it thrives in acidic soil (pH 4.5 to 6) and is adaptable to various garden conditions.

Recommended for:

'Lord Roberts' is highly recommended for gardeners looking to incorporate hedging or screening elements into their outdoor spaces. Its dense habit and striking floral display make it an excellent choice for adding both beauty and functionality to the garden.

Ideal Position:

This Rhododendron is versatile, thriving in most garden situations from full sun to partial shade. Its wind tolerance and robust nature allow for placement in a variety of locations, ensuring a spectacular display of blooms each June.

Plant Care Guide

Rhododendron 'Lord Roberts' is straightforward to care for, requiring acidic, well-drained soil and regular watering, especially in dry conditions. Mulching annually with ericaceous compost can help maintain soil moisture and acidity. While naturally dense, occasional pruning can help manage its shape and encourage healthier growth. Propagation is typically achieved through cuttings.
