Quick Guide

• Compact, conical growth habit

• Striking blue-grey needle foliage

• Ideal for containers and rockeries

• Low maintenance, slow-growing

• Hardy in UK climates

Picea glauca var. albertiana ‘Sander’s Blue’, commonly known as Alberta Spruce ‘Sander’s Blue’, is a dwarf evergreen conifer renowned for its dense, conical form and distinctive blue-grey needles. Reaching an ultimate height of approximately 1 metre and a spread of 50 cm over 10 to 20 years, its compact size makes it an excellent choice for small gardens, containers, and rockeries. The unique foliage colour provides year-round interest and contrasts beautifully with plants like heathers, dwarf rhododendrons, and ornamental grasses. Its slow growth rate and minimal maintenance requirements make it a favoured option for gardeners seeking an attractive yet easy-to-care-for addition to their landscape.

Plant Care Guide

Plant ‘Sander’s Blue’ in moist but well-drained acidic to neutral soil, ensuring the location receives full sun to maintain vibrant foliage colour. While it tolerates light shade, full sun exposure promotes optimal growth. Water regularly during dry periods, especially when newly planted, to establish a strong root system. Once established, it requires minimal pruning; simply remove any dead or damaged branches as needed. Mulching around the base helps retain soil moisture and regulate temperature. Protect from cold, drying winds to prevent needle desiccation. This hardy conifer thrives in UK climates and, with proper care, will be a standout feature in your garden for years.
