Quick Guide
- Compact cone shape, slow-growing evergreen
- Light-green foliage maturing to blue-green
- RHS Award of Garden Merit
- Thrives in full sun
- Perfect for containers and courtyards
The iconic Dwarf Alberta Spruce is a dense, conical evergreen that forms a neat cone of tightly packed, stiff needles. Light green juvenile foliage gradually deepens to a soft blue-green as it matures. Growth is slow, naturally reaching 1.5–2.5 metres tall over many decades, making it ideal for containers, small gardens and courtyards. No pruning is required; simply plant in full sun in slightly acidic, well-drained soil. Recognised with the RHS Award of Garden Merit for its reliability and ornamental qualities, this is one of the most widely planted conifers in horticulture. Its uniform shape and compact habit suit contemporary planting schemes as readily as traditional cottage gardens. Watch for occasional red spider mite or adelgids in dry conditions, but this is generally a trouble-free, long-lived specimen.
Plant Guide
Plant in full sun in neutral to slightly acidic, well-drained soil (clay, loam or sand all suit this cultivar). Water regularly during the first growing season; for container specimens, water when the top 3 cm of soil becomes dry. Once established, it is drought-tolerant and needs little maintenance. No pruning is required unless removing damaged branches. Growth is naturally slow, adding only 4–10 cm per year. Shelter from cold, drying winds.
