Quick Guide
- Brilliant red new growth lasting all season
- Glossy evergreen foliage, maturing to dark green
- Creamy-white flowers in spring
- Hardy H5; tolerates hard pruning easily
- Ideal topiary specimen or hedging shrub
Photinia × fraseri 'Carré Rouge' is a compact evergreen shrub prized for its striking red new foliage. Unlike the traditional Red Robin variety, which fades quickly to green, Carré Rouge maintains its blood-red colouring through successive flushes across the growing season, creating layers of colour from spring through to autumn.
This versatile shrub responds beautifully to training and pruning, making it ideal as a specimen topiary, lollipop standard or hedging plant. In spring, small creamy-white flowers appear among the foliage, a delicate contrast to the bold leaf colour. Mature foliage is glossy dark green, providing an elegant backdrop to the continuous display of crimson new growth.
Position in full sun or partial shade in fertile, well-drained soil with a neutral or slightly acid pH. The compact habit makes it manageable for smaller gardens and container planting, reaching 1.5–2.5 metres in height and spread over 10–20 years. Hardy to H5, it will survive UK winters without protection.
Plant Guide
Plant in full sun or partial shade in fertile, humus-rich soil that is moist but well-drained. Water well during establishment and in dry spells. Prune hard in spring to encourage new red growth and maintain shape; repeat light trimming 2–3 times during the growing season if shaping as hedging or topiary. This cultivar tolerates hard pruning far better than the older Red Robin, making it easier to maintain its desired form and vibrant colour. No feeding required once established; mulch around the base to retain moisture and suppress weeds.
