Quick Guide
- Aromatic leaves perfect for Mediterranean cooking
- Pink flowers attract bees in summer
- Hardy perennial, drought-tolerant once established
- Easy to grow in full sun
- Thrives in well-drained soil or pots
Common oregano is a sun-loving Mediterranean herb prized for its fragrant leaves and delicate pink flowers. This hardy perennial herbaceous sub-shrub produces small, aromatic foliage and attracts bees and pollinators throughout summer and early autumn.
Plant in full sun and well-drained soil (chalk, loam, or sand). Once established, oregano requires minimal care and tolerates drought well. Harvest leaves before flowers open for the best flavour in cooking, or leave the flowers for ornamental appeal and wildlife.
Cut back old, flowered stems in early spring to encourage bushy growth. Perfectly suited to cottage gardens, Mediterranean plantings, wildflower meadows, and containers.
Plant Guide
Plant in a sunny position with well-drained soil; avoid waterlogged conditions as roots rot easily. Harvest aromatic leaves from late spring through autumn. Cut back faded flower stems after blooming to maintain a neat, bushy shape. In spring, remove old stems close to ground level. This herb is toxic to dogs and cats; keep out of reach of pets.
