Quick Guide
- Brilliant red foliage in spring and winter
- Dense, compact evergreen shrub
- Small white flowers in summer
- Thrives in sun, adapts to most soils
- Hardy H5; thrives throughout UK
Nandina domestica 'Obsessed' is a compact, dense evergreen shrub prized for its dramatic foliage colour changes. Lance-shaped leaflets emerge bright red in spring, mature to dark green through summer, then return to vivid red tones in autumn and winter, holding that intensity through the coldest months.
Small white flowers appear on conical panicles in summer. This is an exceptionally easy shrub: once established, it's drought tolerant and adapts to chalk, clay, loam or sand. It tolerates various soil pH levels and rarely attracts pests.
Growth is slow and measured, reaching 0.5–1 metre in both height and spread over 10–20 years, making it ideal for smaller gardens, borders, and foundation plantings where year-round colour is wanted without the space demands of faster-growing shrubs.
Plant Guide
Choose a sunny spot in full sun (south, east or west-facing) for the most intense foliage colour. This shrub tolerates moist but well-drained soil of any type and is hardy H5, surviving to –15°C across most of the UK. Once established, watering needs are minimal in average years. Pruning group 9: light pruning in late winter maintains shape. Remarkably pest-resistant.
