Quick Guide

  • Soft-leaved, spineless mahonia variety
  • Bright red spring growth, dark green year-round
  • Honey-scented yellow flowers August to November
  • Blue-black berries attract birds
  • Compact shrub, fully hardy to -15°C

Mahonia 'Meteor' is a distinctive evergreen shrub, prized for its spineless foliage which is pleasantly soft to handle — rare among mahonias. New growth emerges a striking bright red in spring and summer, gradually deepening to a rich dark green.

From late August through November, the plant produces abundant spires of honey-scented yellow flowers, providing valuable nectar for pollinators during the autumn months when few other plants are in bloom. The flowers are followed by ornamental blue-black berries that attract birds into the garden.

Growing to around 1.2–1.5 metres in height and spread over 5–10 years, this compact shrub suits architectural planting, city gardens and alongside seating or pathways — the soft leaves make it ideal for these positions. Plant in full sun to partial shade and provide moist, well-drained soil. It tolerates chalk, clay and sandy soils. Fully hardy to -15°C, it requires minimal maintenance and is generally pest and disease-free.

A relatively new cultivar from breeder Alan Postill and introduced by Hillier Nurseries, 'Meteor' offers year-round interest with foliage colour, late autumn flowers and wildlife appeal.

Plant Guide

Plant in autumn or spring in a spot with full sun to partial shade. Mahonia 'Meteor' is tolerant of most soils but prefers moist, well-drained conditions; amend with humus-rich compost at planting if your soil is poor. Water well in the first growing season to establish. Once established, it requires little maintenance. Prune after flowering (late winter or early spring) to maintain shape if desired — the naturally well-branched form means minimal pruning is usually needed. No staking required.
