Quick Guide
- Sweet-scented waxy star-shaped flowers
- Trailing stems ideal for hanging baskets
- Thrives in bright indirect light
- Easy to grow, minimal watering needed
- Pet-friendly, non-toxic houseplant
Hoya carnosa is a classic trailing houseplant prized for its exquisite star-shaped flowers and glossy, semi-succulent waxy foliage. Delicate flower clusters emit a sweet honey-butterscotch fragrance that intensifies in the evening, making it especially fragrant at night.
Place in bright indirect light for best flowering—beside an east-facing window or a couple of feet back from a south or west window. Water thoroughly when the soil is completely dry; allow the compost to dry between waterings. Overwatering causes root rot, so err on the side of caution. Average household humidity is fine, though occasional misting is appreciated.
One of the easiest houseplants to grow, Hoya carnosa is ideal for beginners and requires minimal maintenance. Completely non-toxic to cats and dogs. In cultivation for over 200 years, it is a reliably rewarding plant.
Plant Guide
Position your Hoya in bright indirect light for best flowering. Water thoroughly when soil is completely dry—typically every 1–2 weeks depending on season. In spring and summer, feed fortnightly with a balanced liquid feed. Pinch out growing tips to encourage branching. Provide a moss pole or trellis if desired, or allow stems to cascade freely in hanging baskets. Repot only when roots emerge from drainage holes, usually in spring. This slow-growing plant blooms more readily in brighter conditions. Flowers produce excess nectar; some people may experience mild skin irritation from the latex-like sap.
