Quick Guide
- Soft salmon-pink blooms all summer long
- Compact, seed-raised, strongly zoned leaves
- Flowers continuously until first autumn frost
- Ideal for beds, borders and containers
- Warm, versatile colour suits many schemes
Salmon is one of the most versatile and pleasing tones in the summer garden, and Geranium 'Pulsar Salmon' delivers it with generous confidence. Part of the established, seed-raised Pulsar Series of zonal Geraniums, it produces full, rounded clusters of warm salmon-pink flowers — that distinctive blend of soft coral, apricot and rose — held on upright stems above the characteristic rounded, mid-green foliage with its dark horseshoe zone markings. Like all cultivars in the Pulsar Series, it is bred for a compact, tidy habit that holds its shape throughout the season, flowering continuously from late spring right through to the first autumn frosts.
Salmon-toned Geraniums have a particular warmth that bridges the gap between the boldness of red and the softness of pink, making 'Pulsar Salmon' an exceptionally easy plant to place in a mixed planting scheme. It sits naturally alongside cream or soft yellow Bidens, warm white Osteospermum, or the bronze foliage of Carex to create a cohesive, sun-drenched summer display. In containers, combine it with trailing apricot Diascia or soft peach Calibrachoa for a complementary warm-toned arrangement. For greater contrast, pair it with the cool blue of Lobelia 'Sapphire' or purple Verbena for a classic summer combination that carries colour from one end of the season to the other. It also works beautifully as mass bedding, where the salmon tones deepen attractively in full sun.
Plant Care
Plant out after the last frost risk has passed — typically from mid-May across most of the UK. Choose a warm, sunny, sheltered position in fertile, well-drained soil or good-quality peat-free multipurpose compost in pots and containers. Allow the compost or soil surface to dry out partially between waterings; these plants evolved in the semi-arid conditions of southern Africa and will suffer considerably more from waterlogged roots than from a dry spell.
Apply a balanced liquid fertiliser through spring and early summer to support leafy growth, then switch to a high-potash feed once the flowers begin to open to sustain the long season of bloom. Remove spent flower clusters by snapping or cutting the entire stalk cleanly back to the main stem — leaving stubs behind will inhibit the next flush. Pinching back growing tips in the first few weeks after planting out encourages a bushier, more branched habit and ultimately more flowers. As a frost-tender plant, 'Pulsar Salmon' will not survive a UK winter outdoors. Either discard after the first frosts and replant the following spring, or lift plants before frost, cut back by a third, and overwinter in a bright, frost-free space such as a conservatory or cool greenhouse.
