Quick Guide
- Vivid scarlet-red blooms all summer
- Compact, seed-raised, strongly zoned leaves
- Flowers continuously until first frost
- Ideal for beds, borders and containers
- Classic, bold colour impact, low maintenance
Red is the colour most associated with the bedding geranium, and Pelargonium 'Pulsar Red' is one of the finest examples of the type. Part of the established Pulsar Series of seed-raised zonal pelargoniums, it produces generous rounded clusters of vivid scarlet-red single flowers on upright stems throughout the entire summer season, set against the characteristic rounded, mid-green foliage with its dark horseshoe-shaped zone markings. The Pulsar Series was developed specifically for compact, controlled growth and strong colour intensity, making 'Pulsar Red' a particularly reliable choice for gardeners who want consistent, high-impact results with minimal effort.
Red geraniums are a cornerstone of the British summer garden, and 'Pulsar Red' earns its place in both traditional and contemporary planting schemes. For a bold, classic display, plant it alongside white Alyssum or silver-leaved Senecio cineraria for a crisp red-and-white contrast. In a more dynamic container combination, pair it with deep purple Verbena and trailing Lobelia 'Sapphire' for a rich jewel-toned arrangement that carries colour from late spring right through to autumn. It is equally effective planted en masse as a bedding statement, or used as a vivid accent plant amongst mixed summer planting in a sunny border.
Plant Care
Plant out after all risk of frost has passed, typically from mid-May across most of the UK. 'Pulsar Red' performs best in a sunny, sheltered position in fertile, well-drained soil or a good quality peat-free multipurpose compost in containers. Allow the top layer of compost or soil to dry out between waterings — these plants are native to the semi-arid regions of southern Africa and are far more tolerant of dry conditions than of waterlogged roots.
Feed with a balanced liquid fertiliser in spring and early summer to support foliage and early growth, then switch to a high-potash feed once flowering begins to sustain the long season of bloom. Remove spent flower heads promptly by snapping or cutting the entire stalk back to the main stem, which encourages the next flush of flowers. Pinching back growing tips in the first few weeks after planting produces a bushier, more branched plant with greater flower coverage. As a frost-tender plant, it will not survive outdoors over winter. Either replace with fresh plants the following spring, or lift before the first frosts and overwinter in a bright, frost-free space such as a conservatory or unheated greenhouse, cutting back by around a third before bringing indoors.
