Quick Guide
- Vivid deep rose-pink, white-eyed blooms
- Compact, seed-raised, strongly zoned leaves
- Flowers continuously until first autumn frost
- Excellent for beds, borders and containers
- Bold, high-impact colour, easy to grow
For sheer visual impact in the summer garden, Pelargonium 'Pulsar Deep Rose' is difficult to match. This seed-raised zonal pelargonium from the well-regarded Pulsar Series produces large, densely packed clusters of vivid deep rose-pink flowers, each individual bloom displaying a distinctive white eye at its centre — a detail that gives the flower heads a striking luminosity and depth, clearly visible in the image above.
As with all Pulsar Series cultivars, 'Pulsar Deep Rose' is bred for a compact, well-branched, tidy habit that holds its shape throughout the season without becoming leggy. The rounded mid-green foliage carries the characteristic dark horseshoe zone marking of the zonal group, providing a rich, leafy backdrop to the brilliant flowers from late spring right through until the first frosts.
The intensity of the deep rose tone lends itself to bold, confident planting schemes. For maximum drama, combine it with pure white Alyssum or silver-leaved Senecio cineraria to accentuate the contrast with the white eye. In containers, it works beautifully alongside trailing soft pink Bacopa or purple Verbena 'Imagination'. For a classic cottage-garden feel, mass-plant it in a sunny border alongside deep purple Salvia and white Osteospermum. It is equally at home in window boxes, hanging baskets, or as a standalone specimen in a terracotta pot on a south-facing patio.
Plant Care
Plant out after all risk of frost has passed — typically from mid-May across most of the UK. 'Pulsar Deep Rose' does best in a warm, sheltered, sunny position in fertile, well-drained soil or good-quality peat-free multipurpose compost. As with all pelargoniums, allow the compost or soil surface to partially dry out between waterings. These plants originated in semi-arid southern Africa and are considerably more resilient in dry conditions than in wet, waterlogged ground, where root rot can quickly set in.
Feed with a balanced liquid fertiliser through spring and early summer, switching to a high-potash feed once flowering is underway to sustain continuous bloom production. Remove spent flower stems by snapping or cutting the entire stalk back to the main stem — partial deadheading is not enough. Pinching back growing tips in the early weeks after planting encourages a bushier, more floriferous plant. As a frost-tender plant it will not survive winter outdoors in the UK. Either replace with fresh plants the following spring, or lift and store before the first frosts in a bright, frost-free environment such as a conservatory, cutting plants back by a third before bringing them inside.
