Quick Guide
- Small carmine and purple single flowers
- Free-flowering June to first frost
- Hardy dwarf shrub to 30cm
- Dark green foliage, bushy habit
- RHS Award of Garden Merit
Fuchsia 'Tom Thumb' is the definitive dwarf hardy fuchsia, producing abundant small single flowers with carmine-red sepals and tube contrasting with mauve-purple petals from early summer until the first frosts.
Very free-flowering and compact, growing to just 30cm tall and 30-45cm spread, it is perfect for borders, containers, and garden edges. The dark green foliage provides an elegant backdrop to the showy flower display.
Plant in moist but well-drained soil in full sun or partial shade. Deadhead regularly to prolong flowering. In cold areas, plant the base of the stem 5cm below soil surface and apply a deep winter mulch for protection. Hardy to H4 (-10 to -5°C), making it suitable for most UK regions.
Plant Guide
Plant after the last frosts in spring, positioning the stem base 5cm below soil surface. Grow in moist but well-drained soil with good drainage. In exposed or frost-prone areas, provide a deep winter mulch over the root area and avoid wind-exposed sites. Deadhead spent flowers regularly throughout the growing season to encourage continuous blooms. Prune lightly in early spring if needed to maintain shape. In very harsh winters, young plants benefit from a protective cold frame or greenhouse. Once established, this free-flowering cultivar requires minimal maintenance and flowers prolifically each season.
