Ficus microcarpa, commonly known in the UK as the Bonsai Fig, is an elegant indoor bonsai prized for its sculptural trunk, intricate branching and glossy evergreen foliage. Its rich green leaves create a lush canopy above the characterful grey-brown wood, giving the appearance of a mature tree in miniature.
A beautiful focal point for a living room, home office, hallway or bright bedroom, Ficus microcarpa works particularly well in contemporary, Japanese-inspired and minimalist interiors. Display it individually as a statement piece or combine it with foliage plants such as Zamioculcas, Monstera, Ficus elastica or compact ferns for a layered indoor planting display.
This is primarily a foliage plant, rather than one grown for noticeable flowers. Although houseplants contribute positively to an indoor environment, they should not be relied upon as a significant method of air purification.
When grown freely as a houseplant, Ficus microcarpa can eventually become a sizeable indoor tree, potentially reaching around 150–200cm. As a bonsai, however, regular pruning and shaping will comfortably maintain a much smaller size, typically around 30–80cm.
Trim new shoots periodically during active growth to maintain its attractive canopy and encourage denser branching. Its naturally architectural shape makes it particularly rewarding for anyone wanting an impressive indoor plant without requiring large amounts of space.
Plant Guide
Position your Ficus microcarpa in bright, indirect light, although gentle morning or evening sunshine is beneficial. Avoid dark locations and prolonged harsh midday sun.
Water when the upper few centimetres of compost feel slightly dry, watering thoroughly before allowing excess moisture to drain. Never leave the roots permanently waterlogged.
Occasional misting can benefit the foliage where indoor air is particularly dry. Aim for moderate humidity and keep the plant away from cold draughts, radiators and sudden temperature changes.
Feed approximately every two to four weeks during spring and summer with a balanced houseplant or bonsai fertiliser. Reduce feeding during winter.
Use clean bonsai scissors or secateurs for shaping and removing unwanted growth. Regularly inspect leaves and stems for scale insects, spider mites and mealybugs.
