Quick Guide

  • Striking dark green leaves with finely cut lobes
  • Creamy white winter flowers, small black berries follow
  • Hardy evergreen shrub, elegant in shade or containers
  • Partial shade, well-drained soil, shelter from harsh winds
  • Matures to 3–4m; year-round architectural presence in the garden

Fatsia polycarpa 'Green Fingers' is a striking evergreen shrub with an exotic, architectural presence. Its large, deeply lobed leaves feature unusually fine "fingers" that set it apart from related species, creating a sophisticated textural display even in shade.

In early winter, clusters of small creamy white flowers appear, followed by glossy black berries in spring, extending the season of interest.

Hardy in UK coastal and milder areas (H3), it thrives in partial shade with moist, well-drained soil. Position in a sheltered spot, away from harsh wind and excessive winter moisture. Though it reaches 3–4m at maturity, 'Green Fingers' grows well in containers, making it a versatile choice for borders, screens or as a focal point in a courtyard or larger patio.

Plant Guide

Plant 'Green Fingers' in partial shade with shelter from harsh wind and cold. It prefers moist, well-drained soil and tolerates most soil types. In colder regions or exposed gardens, provide protection during hard frosts. Water freely during the growing season and reduce watering in winter. Little pruning is needed; simply remove damaged growth in spring. This cultivar grows well in containers, though shelter and good drainage remain essential. Winter flowers and spring berries extend the season of interest considerably.
