Quick Guide
- Vibrant variegated foliage turning crimson in cooler weather
- Ornamental green and red flower clusters spring to early summer
- H5 hardy; thrives in full sun or part shade
- Highly drought tolerant once established; minimal watering
- Award of Garden Merit; beneficial for pollinators
This is a bushy, compact evergreen subshrub with stunning variegated foliage and ornamental spring flowers. The lance-shaped leaves display green with golden yellow edges, deepening to rich reds, oranges, and peach tones as autumn temperatures drop.
Spring brings showy flower clusters with green bracts and deep red centres, flowering from March to early summer. This plant is hardy to H5, tolerating most UK winters. It thrives in full sun or light shade with well-drained soil (chalk, loam or sandy preferred). Extremely drought tolerant once established, it is ideal for low-maintenance borders, gravel gardens and containers.
The plant reaches 1–1.5 metres tall and spreads 0.5–1 metre. It holds the Award of Garden Merit and supports pollinators. The sap is a skin irritant and harmful if ingested—wear gloves when handling.
Plant Guide
Plant in full sun or part shade in well-drained soil in spring or summer. Water sparingly; once established it is highly drought tolerant. In late summer or autumn, cut back the flowering shoots to ground level to maintain a compact shape. The plant is generally pest and disease-free and seldom requires feeding. It is extremely cold hardy and rarely needs winter protection in the UK. Wear gloves when pruning or handling, as the sap can irritate skin.
