Quick Guide
- Fragrant white flowers followed by bright yellow lemons
- Glossy evergreen leaves year-round
- Needs full sun and frost protection
- Best in a sunny conservatory or bright patio
- Feed regularly during spring and summer
Citrus limon is prized for its intensely fragrant white flowers, which appear throughout spring and summer, followed by ripening bright yellow lemons. The glossy evergreen foliage is attractive in itself, with small dark green leaves that remain ornamental year-round.
In the UK, grow this tender citrus in a warm, bright conservatory, greenhouse or south-facing patio in summer. Position in full sun with good airflow. Soil must drain freely; use loam-based compost with added grit. Water when the top of the compost feels dry, but never allow it to dry completely.
Feed with balanced citrus fertiliser three to four times during the growing season, particularly once small fruits begin to form. Bring the pot indoors before the first hard frosts, or provide protection if left outside in mild southern areas. Occasional frost damage to new growth is possible.
Plant Guide
Position in the brightest possible light, ideally south or west-facing, with six to eight hours of direct sun daily. During the growing season (April to September), water freely when the top 2–3cm of compost feels dry; from October, reduce watering. In winter, move the pot indoors before the first hard frosts or provide horticultural fleece, as frost below –2°C can damage wood. Feed with diluted citrus fertiliser every two to three weeks from April until late summer. Good air circulation helps prevent scale insects and spider mite.
