Quick Guide

  • Magenta-pink blooms July to October
  • Compact 30-45cm, ideal for containers
  • Attracts bees and butterflies
  • Deer-resistant, drought-tolerant when established
  • Easy care in full sun to partial shade

The Japanese Anemone 'Red Riding Hood' is a compact cultivar from the Fantasy series, delivering vibrant magenta-pink flowers with golden yellow centres from midsummer through autumn. Its neat, tidy form makes it perfect for containers and borders alike, flowering reliably from July until the first frosts. Dark green, deeply lobed foliage provides a striking backdrop to the succession of blooms.

Plant in full sun or partial shade in moist, well-drained soil—it tolerates clay, chalk, and loam equally well. Once established, it is drought-tolerant and low-maintenance, requiring only a light cut-back after flowering and protection from excessive winter wetness. The plant is deer-resistant and nectar-rich flowers attract bees and butterflies throughout its long season. Deadheading prolongs the display, while the developing seed heads offer ornamental value in autumn.

Plant Guide

Plant in spring in humus-rich, well-drained soil, ensuring winter moisture does not accumulate. Space 45-60cm apart. In its first season, water regularly until established. From year two onwards, it requires minimal intervention: water during dry spells and apply a light mulch in autumn for frost protection in colder regions. Cut back old stems after flowering or in early spring. Divide congested clumps in spring or autumn. Watch for powdery mildew and slugs in wet seasons.
