Quick Guide
- Striking coral-red bark in winter
- Leaves turn golden in autumn
- Pinkish-yellow spring leaves
- Ideal for year-round interest
- Hardy and easy to care for
Acer palmatum 'Sangokaku', commonly known as Coral Bark Maple, is a large deciduous shrub or small tree that stands out in any garden with its unique coral-red bark, especially visible in winter. In spring, the delicate 5-lobed leaves emerge pinkish-yellow, maturing to a bright green in summer, and transforming into a stunning golden hue in the autumn. This variety is highly desirable for its year-round beauty and its ability to create a striking focal point in the landscape. Growing up to 6 meters tall, 'Sangokaku' is perfect for adding vertical interest to the garden, and its vibrant bark brings a splash of colour to the winter garden. Suitable for planting in a variety of settings, including borders, containers, and as a standalone specimen, this Japanese Maple is a fantastic choice for gardeners looking to add structure and colour to their outdoor space.
Plant Care Guide
Acer 'Sangokaku' prefers a sheltered position in partial shade but will tolerate full sun, provided it is planted in well-drained soil. To preserve the brightness of its bark and leaf colour, it's best to avoid overly exposed, windy locations. Water regularly during dry periods to keep the soil moist but not waterlogged. Mulching in spring with organic matter helps retain soil moisture and suppress weeds. Pruning is rarely needed but can be done in late winter to remove any dead or damaged branches and to maintain its shape.
