Prunus incisa 'Kojo-no-mai', commonly known as Fuji Cherry, is a stunning deciduous shrub that adds spectacular beauty to any garden, especially in late winter to early spring. This variety is appreciated for its wiry, zig-zag branches that burst into life with crimson buds opening to display delicate pale pink flowers, which mature to a deeper pink at the centre. The plant has an upright, compact growth reaching an ultimate height and spread of 1.5–2.5 meters over 5–10 years, making it suitable for small gardens or as a feature plant in larger landscapes. The lance-shaped leaves provide good autumn colour, turning to fiery shades of red and orange, enhancing the garden's interest in multiple seasons.
Plant Care
'Kojo-no-mai' thrives in full sun and prefers moist, well-drained, fertile soil. It's a slow-growing plant, making it manageable and ideal for confined spaces. Pruning is minimal, focusing on maintaining shape and encouraging healthy growth. This plant is noted for its resilience and low maintenance needs, making it a favourite among gardeners looking for reliable spring colour.
