  • Looks stunning when planted with white flowering perennial plants

  • Polystichum will also thrive in a container in a shady corner as well as the soil

Polystichum polyblepharum, commonly known as the Japanese Lace Fern, is a beautifully elegant evergreen fern that brings a touch of lush, green texture to shaded areas of your garden or indoor spaces. Known for its glossy, dark green fronds that arch gracefully, this fern adds an exquisite, delicate appearance reminiscent of lace.

This fern is particularly well-suited to shady spots in woodland gardens, mixed borders, and even containers. Its evergreen nature ensures that it provides year-round interest and structure, making it a valuable addition to any garden design. The Japanese Lace Fern can reach an ultimate height of up to 60 cm and a spread of 60 cm, forming a neat, compact clump that fits well in various garden settings.

Polystichum polyblepharum pairs beautifully with other shade-loving plants such as hostas, heucheras, and astilbes, enhancing the diversity and visual appeal of your garden. This fern is also known for its ability to improve air quality when grown indoors, making it a beneficial and attractive houseplant.

Plant Care

Polystichum polyblepharum thrives in partial to full shade and prefers consistently moist, well-drained soil. Regular watering is important, especially during dry periods, to maintain the plant’s health. Mulching around the base of the plant helps retain soil moisture and keeps the roots cool. This fern requires minimal feeding; a balanced, slow-release fertiliser in spring can support healthy growth. Pruning is generally not necessary, but removing any old or damaged fronds can keep the plant looking tidy and fresh. Ensure the soil is moist but not too wet for the first two weeks.

Spring: Feed with a seaweed feed to encourage lots of fresh healthy leafy growth in the spring.
Autumn: Cutback untidy foliage in autumn to ground level and the perennial will reappear in the following spring
