Quick Guide
- Showy yellow flowers
- Ideal for coastal gardens
- Drought tolerant once established
- Fast-growing shrub
- Flowers in late spring
Genista maderensis, commonly known as the Madeira Broom, is a spectacular shrub native to the Madeira Islands. This robust plant is celebrated for its vibrant, dense clusters of yellow flowers that bloom profusely in late spring, creating a stunning visual display. The bright flowers contrast beautifully against its dark green, almost needle-like foliage, making it a focal point in any garden setting. Genista maderensis is particularly well-suited to coastal gardens due to its high tolerance to sea spray and wind. It’s a fast-growing shrub that quickly reaches its full size, providing rapid coverage and adding instant impact to bare spaces. Beyond its beauty, this shrub is also prized for its ability to thrive in poor soils and withstand periods of drought once established, making it a low-maintenance choice for challenging garden environments.
Plant Care Guide
Genista maderensis thrives in well-drained soil and full sun, where it can receive ample sunlight to promote the best flowering. It is generally low-maintenance but benefits from occasional watering during extremely dry periods, especially when young. No regular pruning is necessary, but if shaping is required, it should be done immediately after flowering to avoid removing the next season's buds. It is frost tender, so in cooler climates, it may need protection from harsh winter conditions or be grown in a container that can be moved to a sheltered location.
