Quick Guide
- Striking burgundy-red architectural stems
- Long-lived succulent with minimal care
- Thrives in bright light
- Needs sharp drainage and infrequent water
- Toxic sap—wear gloves when handling
Euphorbia trigona rubra is a striking tender succulent with three-sided stems in deep burgundy-red, accented with small paired spines. The small teardrop-shaped leaves are purplish-red and typically drop as the plant matures, making the dramatic stems the main feature. Colours intensify in bright light.
Place in a bright spot indoors—full sun or a sunny windowsill is ideal. Use well-draining cactus or succulent mix with 50–75% grit (sand, perlite or pumice). Water sparingly, allowing the soil to dry completely between waterings. Keep temperatures above 10°C in winter; avoid cold draughts.
The white latex sap is irritant to skin and eyes and toxic if ingested, so handle with gloves and keep away from children and pets. Mature stems branch profusely, creating an impressive, sculptural focal point in a bright corner.
Plant Guide
Euphorbia trigona rubra prefers bright, indirect or full sun and will colour-up more intensely in strong light. Water only when the top inch of soil feels dry, typically every 7–10 days in warm months; reduce watering in winter. The plant tolerates low humidity (40–50%) and prefers warm, constant temperatures. Feed fortnightly with diluted succulent or cactus fertiliser during spring and summer. Prune in early spring to shape or manage height. Handle with gloves at all times due to skin-irritant sap.
