Quick Guide
- Double purple flowers from July to September
- Vigorous climber growing 3-4 metres high
- Recipient of RHS Award of Garden Merit
- Thrives in full sun or partial shade
- Undemanding and easy for beginner gardeners
This historic French clematis is renowned for its fully double, smoky reddish-purple flowers that appear in abundance from July through September. Each double bloom measures around 2 inches across with recurved, twisted sepals creating an exquisite pompon effect. The flowers open slowly and persistently throughout the season, each lasting approximately two weeks before the outer petals fall, revealing a delicate inner pompom that lasts another week.
Plant in full sun or partial shade in any well-drained soil; it is particularly tolerant and undemanding. This vigorous Viticella Group climber grows rapidly, reaching 3-4 metres, making it ideal for clothing fences, trellises, or pergolas. Water regularly during the growing season. Prune hard in early spring (Pruning Group 3), cutting back to approximately one foot from the ground to encourage strong new growth and abundant flowering.
One of the oldest clematis cultivars, introduced around 1900 and bred by renowned French nurseryman Francis Morel, it remains popular for good reason: hardy, carefree, and disease-resistant, with the distinction of holding the RHS Award of Garden Merit since 1993.
Plant Guide
This viticella clematis is exceptionally easy to grow. Plant in spring or autumn in well-drained soil, allowing shoots to climb into sun with roots in shade. Water regularly during establishment and dry periods. Feed fortnightly with balanced fertiliser during the growing season. Prune hard in late winter or early spring, cutting back to 30-60cm from the ground. Remove dead wood and tie in new shoots as they develop. This hardy, undemanding variety tolerates poor soils and grows vigorously in most conditions.
