Cirsium rivulare ‘Atropurpureum’, commonly known as Plume Thistle, is a striking perennial that brings vibrant color and architectural interest to any garden. This plant is noted for its upright, branching stems topped with spherical, deep crimson flower heads that bloom from early summer to late autumn. The flowers are about 3 cm across and provide a rich source of nectar for bees, butterflies, and other pollinators, making it an excellent choice for wildlife-friendly gardens.

The foliage forms a dense basal rosette of dark green, spiny leaves, which contrasts beautifully with the vibrant flowers. Cirsium rivulare ‘Atropurpureum’ grows to an ultimate height of 100-150 cm and a spread of 40-50 cm, making it a fantastic choice for adding height and drama to garden borders and mixed perennial beds. It thrives in full sun and prefers moist, well-drained soil, performing well in a variety of soil types, including chalk, loam, and sand.

This robust plant is highly resistant to pests and diseases and is relatively low maintenance. It can tolerate temperatures down to -15°C, ensuring it remains a reliable and attractive feature in your garden throughout the seasons.

Plant Care

Cirsium rivulare ‘Atropurpureum’ prefers full sun and moist, well-drained soil. Water regularly during dry periods to maintain soil moisture, but avoid waterlogging. Deadhead spent flowers to encourage further blooming and maintain a tidy appearance. In late autumn, cut back the plant to ground level to prepare it for winter. Applying a light mulch in colder regions can help protect the roots during winter months.

Spring: Feed with a seaweed feed to encourage new, healthy leafy growth in the spring. Protect new emerging foliage from snails and slugs

Autumn: Cutback foliage in autumn to ground level, and the perennial will reappear in the following spring

Delivery Timeframes

We aim to deliver orders within 2–4 working days. During peak seasons, such as Christmas, delivery times may vary slightly due to increased demand. We will keep you informed at every stage.

Click & Collect

We encourage you to collect from our garden centre in Kentish Town — it saves on delivery costs and gives you the chance to see our full range of plants and products in person.

All Click & Collect orders must be collected within 7 days of being ready, unless a later date has been arranged with us in advance. If an order is not collected within this time, it will be cancelled and a refund issued.

Returns Policy

If you need to return an item, please contact us within 14 days of receipt to arrange a return or exchange. Products must be in their original condition and packaging. Plants may be non-refundable unless they arrive damaged or defective.

Items bought in-store or collected can be returned directly at the garden centre. If you would like us to collect a return and it is in good condition (e.g. you have changed your mind), it must be in its original condition, and the same delivery cost will apply for the return.

Plants marked as reduced for end-of-season clearance are non-refundable, as they are sold specifically to clear stock. This does not apply to special offers or multibuy promotions, which are eligible for returns as per our standard terms.
