Quick Guide

  • Fine branching with glossy, delicate foliage

  • Produces tiny white flowers in summer

  • Thrives in bright, indirect indoor light

  • Responds well to light pruning

  • Elegant, compact, beginner-friendly choice

The Sageretia theezans, commonly known as the Chinese Sweet Plum Bonsai, is a graceful and decorative indoor bonsai valued for its fine, delicate leaves, naturally refined branching, and subtle seasonal interest. Its small, glossy green foliage forms a dense canopy, and in the warmer months it may produce tiny white flowers followed by small plum-coloured berries, giving the plant its common name.

This bonsai has a charming, almost feathery leaf texture that creates a soft, elegant silhouette. The trunk develops character quickly, often showing mottled or textured bark that adds visual maturity even in compact specimens. It is an ideal choice for desks, bright living rooms, or hall shelves where it can enjoy good light without harsh direct sun.

Sageretia thrives in warm, stable indoor conditions and appreciates gentle humidity, making it suitable for homes with steady temperatures. It grows moderately fast and responds well to trimming, allowing you to refine the canopy shape and encourage branching. With regular pruning, it usually reaches 25–40 cm, making it an easy bonsai to maintain without becoming unruly.

Pair it with other indoor tropical bonsai such as Ficus Ginseng, Carmona, or Fukien Tea for a harmonious display. Its airy foliage also contrasts beautifully with broader-leafed houseplants like Peace Lily or Schefflera.

Bonsai Care Guide

Place your Sageretia in bright, indirect light—near a south or west window is ideal, but softened by a sheer curtain. Keep the soil lightly moist; never allow it to fully dry out. Water when the top 1–2 cm feels slightly dry, ensuring good drainage. Mist occasionally to support humidity.

Feed every two weeks in spring and summer with a balanced bonsai fertiliser, and monthly in autumn. Reduce feeding in winter when growth slows.

Prune new shoots to maintain shape and encourage bushy growth. Watch for aphids or scale, particularly in warm rooms. Protect from draughts and avoid temperatures below 15°C.

Repot every 2–3 years into a free-draining bonsai substrate. A glazed ceramic pot cover or contemporary Elho cover pot works well for highlighting the fine foliage structure.
