Quick Guide
- Distinctive silvery-spotted foliage, crimson undersides
- Delicate pink or white flowers in summer
- Thrives in bright indirect light
- Needs high humidity for best growth
- Toxic to pets; handle with care
The polka dot begonia is a striking cane begonia native to Brazil, prized for its distinctive heart-shaped leaves adorned with silvery-white spots and deep crimson undersides. It produces delicate clusters of pale pink or white flowers throughout the summer months.
This is a modest-sized houseplant that grows upright on sturdy stems to around 60–90cm tall indoors. The silver spots on the foliage are actually air pockets in the leaf tissue, creating a striking blister variegation effect that makes this begonia unmistakable.
Position in bright, indirect light, ideally near an east or south-facing window behind a sheer curtain. Avoid direct sunlight, which will scorch the elegant leaves. This begonia loves humidity and should be kept in a naturally humid room such as a bathroom or kitchen, or stand the pot on a tray of moist pebbles. Keep soil consistently moist but never waterlogged.
The plant is tender and requires protection under glass in the UK year-round. It is toxic if ingested due to calcium oxalate crystals, so keep it away from curious pets and young children.
Plant Guide
Position in partial shade or bright indirect light, away from direct sun. Maintain high humidity (50–70%) using a pebble tray, grouping plants together, or light misting. Water moderately when the top inch of soil is dry. Begonias contain calcium oxalate and are toxic if ingested—keep away from pets and children. Feed with a balanced liquid fertiliser at alternate waterings during the growing season. Prune back canes in late spring to encourage bushier growth. Avoid waterlogging and temperature fluctuations, which cause leaf drop.
