Quick Guide
- Striking green leaves spotted with white
- Produces delicate pink flowers year-round
- Loves bright, indirect light
- Needs consistent moisture and humidity
- Beginner-friendly indoor houseplant
Begonia maculata 'Bubbles', commonly known as the Polka Dot Begonia, is a striking tropical houseplant prized for its distinctive long, silvery-spotted green foliage. The leaves grow on elegant bamboo-like canes and develop the plant's characteristic white spots as it matures.
This easy-care houseplant produces delicate pink flowers throughout the year, adding gentle colour to your indoor space. The foliage alone is captivating – the contrast between the rich green and silvery white spots creates an eye-catching display that works perfectly in living rooms, bedrooms or home offices.
Begonia maculata thrives in bright, indirect light – an east or west-facing window is ideal. Keep the soil consistently moist but never soggy; check the top inch before watering. High humidity is essential for this tropical plant – misting, a pebble tray, or grouping with other plants will keep it happy.
Feed monthly during spring and summer with a balanced houseplant fertilizer. The plant grows slowly and prefers a snug pot, so repot only every 1–2 years. Prune leggy stems in spring to encourage fuller growth.
Plant Guide
Keep your Polka Dot Begonia in bright, indirect light away from direct sun, which can scorch the leaves. Water when the top inch of soil feels dry, then water thoroughly, allowing excess to drain. The plant thrives with high humidity – mist regularly or use a pebble tray. Maintain temperatures between 16–24°C and keep away from cold draughts and heating vents. Feed fortnightly during growing season (spring and summer). Propagate new plants easily from stem cuttings in spring or summer.
