Quick Guide

  • Velvety dark foliage with golden-red veining
  • Thrives in bright, indirect light
  • Needs high humidity, perfect for terrariums
  • Compact miniature orchid with year-round appeal
  • Pet-safe and easy to grow indoors

The Golden Jewel Orchid is prized for its striking foliage rather than its flowers. Deep blackish-green leaves are adorned with intricate golden-red veining that catches the light beautifully, making each leaf a work of art. This miniature terrestrial orchid originates from the mountainous regions of Yunnan, China and northern Vietnam, where it grows in shaded, humid forest floors. In the home, it thrives in bright, indirect light and high humidity of 60–90%, making it ideal for terrariums, vivariums or humid bathroom windowsills. Plant in a moisture-retaining substrate of sphagnum moss mixed with perlite and bark, and keep it evenly moist but never waterlogged. The plant produces small lime-green to yellow flowers in summer, though these are secondary to the foliage display. Anoectochilus chapaensis is compact, reaching just 12–18cm tall, and suits shelves, desks or glass cases where its delicate foliage can be admired up close. It is pet-safe and a rewarding choice for anyone seeking an unusual, visually striking houseplant.

Plant Guide

Position your Anoectochilus chapaensis in bright, indirect light — avoid direct sun, which scorches the leaves. Maintain humidity of 60–90% by misting regularly or using a pebble tray. Keep the sphagnum moss substrate evenly moist but not waterlogged; allow the top to dry slightly between waterings. Temperatures between 15–18°C suit it best. Fertilise sparingly with diluted orchid feed during the growing season. This species thrives in terrariums and closed glass containers where humidity naturally builds. Repot only when roots outgrow the pot; these orchids prefer snug conditions.
