Quick Guide
- Elegant S-shaped trained trunk with glossy foliage
- Improves indoor air quality naturally
- Thrives in bright, indirect light
- Low-maintenance houseplant bonsai
- Perfect for desks, shelves, and windowsills
Ficus retusa is an elegant indoor bonsai featuring a distinctive S-shaped trunk and rich, glossy green foliage. This tropical evergreen is highly valued for its architectural form and air-purifying qualities, making it an ideal companion for modern living spaces, offices, or minimalist décor.
Position in bright, indirect light—ideally within 3 feet of a south-facing window—to prevent foliage drop. Water whenever the soil feels slightly dry; the plant prefers consistently moist (but never waterlogged) soil and benefits from regular misting to maintain humidity. Feed with balanced liquid fertilizer every two weeks during the growing season. Avoid cold draughts and sudden temperature changes, as this tropical plant prefers steady warmth between 18–24°C.
Prune regularly to maintain its distinctive S-shape and encourage dense branching. The Ficus retusa responds well to patient shaping and is forgiving of occasional neglect, making it suitable for houseplant growers of moderate experience.
Plant Guide
Light is critical—provide bright, indirect illumination for several hours daily. Water whenever the soil's surface becomes slightly dry, using room-temperature soft water; the plant tolerates occasional underwatering better than waterlogging. Mist regularly to encourage humidity, though avoid excessive misting to prevent fungal issues. Feed every two weeks during spring and summer. Maintain stable temperatures between 18–24°C and avoid cold draughts or sudden temperature swings, which cause stress and leaf drop. This tropical plant is not frost-tolerant and will suffer below 10°C. Repot every 2–3 years in spring using free-draining, neutral to slightly acidic compost.
