About Our Outdoor Climbers & Wall Plants Collection
Our outdoor climbing plants collection at Boma covers the full spectrum of garden climbers — from the classic clematis, with varieties spanning every season, to wisteria, passion flower, jasmine, and wall shrubs that climb or fan out against sunny fences. Star jasmine (Trachelospermum jasminoides) is among our best sellers: an evergreen climbing plant with fragrant white flowers that bloom from June through July, holding Award of Garden Merit status. Wisteria — a vigorous climber and outstanding Award of Garden Merit winner — delivers spectacular hanging lilac and white flower racemes in May on established plants grown in a sunny spot.
Most climbing plants prefer full sun or partial shade, sheltered from harsh winds, growing upwards against a warm south- or west-facing wall, fence, or trellis. Evergreen climbers including Clematis armandii 'Apple Blossom' and Trachelospermum need a sheltered position to overwinter well in UK conditions. Many climbers — including Clematis, Lonicera, and Jasminum — grow happily in partial shade provided their roots remain cool and moist. Water regularly during the first growing season and incorporate organic matter at planting to establish a strong root system.
Every garden needs at least three outdoor climbing plants to extend seasonal interest through spring, summer, and autumn. Evergreen climbers such as Trachelospermum and Hedera provide year round interest, while deciduous climbers like Clematis and passion flower bring seasonal drama and summer colour. Semi evergreen Lonicera (Honeysuckle) bridges the gap with sweet pea-like fragrance. For walls and fences, wall shrubs including Pyracantha work alongside climbing plants to fill vertical space with berries and flowers.
