  1. Sow basil, lettuce, radish, beetroot, and salad leaves regularly for a continuous summer supply.
  2. Sow nasturtiums and other nectar-rich wildflowers to attract bees and brighten up your beds.
  3.  in flower beds and vegetable gardens to attract pollinators. Nasturtiums also act as a sacrificial crop to lure aphids away.
  4. Plant out seedlings of courgette, tomato, pepper, sweetcorn, runner beans, French beans, and squash.
  5. Provide supports for climbing varieties or choose dwarf types for pots.
  6. Harden off and plant out tender vegetables like beans, courgettes, and tomatoes.
  7. Stake cordon tomatoes and pinch out any side shoots.
  8. Feed tomato plants and other container-grown vegetables (e.g., dwarf beans, courgettes) fortnightly with a high-potash (tomato) feed.
  9. Deadhead repeat-flowering roses and pick sweet peas regularly to encourage more blooms.
  10. First early potatoes should be ready once flowering; dig a few to check size before harvesting fully.
  11. Harvest garlic and onions once their leaves yellow and flop over.
  12. Net strawberry plants as they ripen to protect berries from birds.
  13. Prune spring-flowering shrubs like Weigela, Forsythia, flowering currant (Ribes), and Philadelphus by removing dead/damaged growth and cutting flowered shoots back to strong side shoots. Rejuvenate by cutting one in every three or four old stems to the base. Prune summer-flowering shrubs like Philadelphus and Weigela after blooming.
  14. Give Wisteria its summer prune by cutting this year’s long shoots back to 20cm.
  15. Once hardy geraniums finish flowering, cut them back for new growth and blooms.
  16. Fill pots and hanging baskets with summer bedding like geraniums, petunias, begonias, lobelia, and busy lizzies. Feed fortnightly with a high-potash feed.
  17. Mow lawns weekly. In dry weather, mow less often and with a higher blade setting. Consider leaving some areas uncut to support wildlife.
  18. Keep weeds under control by hoeing beds on dry days and leaving weeds to dry on the surface.
  19. Water plants in the morning or evening to reduce evaporation. Install water butts to collect rainwater.
  20. Open greenhouse vents on hot days and use shade paint or blinds to prevent overheating.
  21. Always check for nesting birds before trimming hedges or shrubs.
