⦁ March is the perfect time to plant summer flowering bulbs. If you have poor drainage it may pay you to plant your bulbs in a bed of grit sand to prevent rotting and to aid drainage.
⦁ Plant out early potatoes this month to ensure a good crop by June-July. It is important to have chitted your earlies for about six weeks prior to planting out.
⦁ Apply mulch to your borders this month, this will help suppress any weed growth and help create a crumbly tilth.
⦁ As the weather warms and the light levels increase you may need to mow the lawn. Do so on a dry day and on a high cut to begin with.
⦁ Protect fleshy new shoots from slugs with Slug Gone. These wool pellets are a highly effective barrier against slugs and snails and can be used around pts and children.
⦁ Apply a balanced fertilise to your borders this month. Fish, blood and bone o Growmore would be ideal.
⦁ You can continue to prune deciduous summer flowering shrubs this month being careful not to prune any spring flowering shrubs that have yet to bloom. You could also prune winter flowering shrubs that may have finished but leave evergreens like Choisya or Pittopsorum until later.
⦁ March is the perfect month to plant containerised plants out. We recommend a dusting of Rootgrow mycorrhizal fungi. This will encourage plants to grow a secondary root system that will support them throughout their lifetime.
I wandered lonely as a cloud
That floats on high o’er vales and hills
When at once I saw a crowd,
A host, of golden daffodils
